Arts Society West Wales: The Arts & Crafts Movement in Churches in England & Wales

Between about 1890 and 1930, Arts and Crafts designers built and contributed to hundreds of churches across England and Wales. Some are famous schemes including the church building and all its interior fittings, such as All Saints, Brockhampton in Herefordshire; St. Mark, Brithdir and St. Andrew’s, Roker. Sometimes it’s just one commission – a stained glass window, a screen, a font cover. Discover how companies like Morris & Co. onwards changed the course of church furnishing in England, and how the next generation of Arts and Crafts designers revolutionised church design. The focus will be on the churches of the west, from the Midlands into the South West, and on the work of designers such as Henry Wilson, George Heywood Maunoir Sumner, and John Coates Carter in Wales.
